What is bitumen and what types are there?
Bitumen or gilsonite is a black, pasty material used in waterproofing insulation and asphalt construction. There are various kinds of bitumen; each of them has its application. Asphaltic material is a derivative of oil and is often produced in oil refineries. Asphaltic material is a concentrated, highly viscous, oily substance that is either found in sediments such as petroleum sands and bitumen lakes (natural bitumen) or obtained as a residue from the distillation of crude oil (refined bitumen).
