Gilsonite SDS / MSDS – Safety and Handling Information
This page provides general safety and handling information for Gilsonite (natural bitumen / natural asphalt) supplied as a solid lump or powder. Gilsonite is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon material; it is not a clear liquid and the product described on this page is not a mineral-spirit formulation.
Because grade, particle size and product specifications can vary, customers should use the product-specific Safety Data Sheet and quality documents supplied with their material. The original product documents and analysis shown below are retained as reference documents for Asia Gilsonite material.

- Physical form: black to brown-black solid lump or powder, depending on order.
- Primary industrial uses: drilling fluids, asphalt and bitumen modification, coatings, inks, foundry and related industrial formulations.

Handling and Exposure Considerations
Normal industrial hygiene practices should be used when handling Gilsonite. Powder handling can generate airborne dust, so avoid unnecessary dust generation and accumulation. Use suitable local ventilation or dust control where needed and follow the exposure limits and protective measures applicable at the workplace.
- Eyes: avoid dust contact; use appropriate eye protection where airborne dust is possible.
- Skin: wash exposed skin after handling and use work gloves appropriate to the operation.
- Inhalation: avoid breathing excessive dust; where ventilation is insufficient, use respiratory protection selected under the site’s safety program.
- Storage: keep the product dry and away from incompatible materials and uncontrolled heat or ignition sources.
First-Aid Guidance
Eye Contact
Rinse cautiously with clean water to remove dust. Obtain medical attention if irritation persists.
Skin Contact
Wash with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing if necessary.
Inhalation
Move the affected person to fresh air. Seek medical attention if breathing difficulty or persistent irritation occurs.
Ingestion
Do not induce vomiting unless directed by medical personnel. Obtain medical advice if a significant quantity is swallowed or symptoms develop.
Fire and Dust Precautions
Gilsonite is a combustible solid. Fine organic dust can present additional fire or dust-explosion hazards when dispersed in air under certain conditions. Keep powder-handling areas clean, control ignition sources and use suitable industrial dust-control practices. Firefighting methods and extinguishing media should follow the current product-specific SDS and local emergency procedures.
