Gilsonite (uintaite) is a naturally occurring solid bitumen, or asphaltite, that can fill fractures in sedimentary rock. The Uinta Basin of northeastern Utah is one of its best-documented geological occurrences. Natural bitumen is also produced in other regions, including Iran, but the composition and mining conditions of one deposit should not be assumed to describe another. This article distinguishes location from the commercial quality of the material.
Where is Gilsonite found in the Uinta Basin?
In the eastern Uinta Basin, Gilsonite occurs in steep veins or dikes that cut sedimentary formations. The U.S. Geological Survey report on the dikes documents their geometry and structural setting. A separate USGS study of bitumen generation and migration identifies the Green River Formation oil-shale interval as a likely source for the deposits in that basin. These studies describe Utah; they do not establish the exact geology of every material sold as Gilsonite elsewhere.

Is Gilsonite found in Iran?
Iran is a source of commercially supplied natural bitumen and Gilsonite-type material. Asia Gilsonite processes and exports material from the region. Specific claims about a mine’s age, location, reserves, extraction method or comparative purity require deposit records and laboratory evidence; they cannot be inferred from the Uinta Basin alone. For the grades offered to buyers, use the Gilsonite specifications and analysis rather than a geographic label.

How is Gilsonite mined?
Extraction depends on the depth, width and orientation of a deposit, the surrounding rock and site conditions. A description of one mine cannot establish that all Gilsonite is mined underground or in open pits. Once extracted, material can be sorted and supplied as lumps or crushed, milled and screened into powder. Learn how the forms differ in the powder and mesh guide and the lump and powder specifications.
Does origin determine the best industrial use?
No. For drilling fluids, asphalt, coatings and other uses, buyers should evaluate measured ash, moisture, particle size, softening behavior and application-specific performance. The Gilsonite applications hub explains the major uses.
