Gilsonite in road construction is used as a natural asphalt modifier to adjust the properties of petroleum-bitumen binders and asphalt mixtures. Why Gilsonite Is Added to Road Asphalt
Road binders must balance stiffness, workability, temperature response, aggregate adhesion and long-term durability. Gilsonite can be blended into asphalt systems as a hard natural asphaltite component. Depending on the base bitumen, Gilsonite grade, dosage and mix design, it can increase binder stiffness and softening point and can help improve resistance to permanent deformation at elevated pavement temperatures.
The final effect is formulation-dependent. A road mix should therefore be evaluated with the project binder and aggregate rather than assuming one universal performance result.
Potential Performance Benefits
- High-temperature stiffness: Gilsonite can increase stiffness and softening characteristics of the modified binder.
- Rutting resistance: a stiffer, properly designed mixture can be useful in heavy-traffic or hot-climate conditions where permanent deformation is a concern.
- Bituminous compatibility: Gilsonite is itself a natural asphaltite and can be incorporated into petroleum-bitumen systems using an appropriate mixing procedure.
- Grade flexibility: ash content, particle size and other properties can be selected according to the target formulation.

Road and asphalt customers commonly evaluate ash content, moisture, particle size and softening behavior when choosing material. The best grade is not automatically the lowest-ash product; selection should be based on the binder, target performance and project economics.

How Gilsonite Is Incorporated into Asphalt Mixes
Gilsonite may be introduced through a dry or wet blending approach depending on the plant, binder system and project procedure. The required addition rate cannot be defined correctly without the base binder and performance target. Laboratory mix design should determine the appropriate dosage, mixing temperature and sequence for each project.
Before field production, contractors or laboratories should confirm dispersion and evaluate relevant binder or mixture properties under the standards required for the project.
Road Projects Where Gilsonite May Be Considered
Gilsonite-modified asphalt can be evaluated for highways, industrial roads, intersections, heavy-load areas and other pavements where higher-temperature stability or binder modification is desired. Suitability depends on traffic, climate, aggregate, base bitumen and specification requirements.

Gilsonite should not be treated as a universal replacement for every polymer or modifier. SBS, crumb rubber, fibers and other additives solve different engineering problems. Gilsonite’s advantage is that it is a naturally occurring asphaltite compatible with bituminous systems and available in different grades. The correct choice should be based on required pavement performance, plant capability, specification and cost.
