Industrial Uses of Gilsonite | Applications Guide

Gilsonite is a naturally occurring solid hydrocarbon used as a performance additive in several industrial formulations. Its suitability depends on grade, ash content, moisture, softening behavior, particle size and compatibility with the customer’s system.

Gilsonite in drilling fluids

In selected oil- and water-based drilling-fluid formulations, Gilsonite may contribute to fluid-loss control, sealing and wellbore stability. Performance and treatment level must be confirmed by laboratory testing. See Gilsonite for drilling fluids and Gilsonite as an FLC additive.

Gilsonite in asphalt and road construction

Foundry, inks, coatings and other uses

Gilsonite is also used in selected foundry formulations, printing inks, industrial coatings, rubber compounds, resins, adhesives, waterproofing products and pipe-coating systems. Each application requires its own compatibility, processing and performance tests; one grade is not automatically suitable for every use.
